The desire for fame has been a staple of human societies since the turn of the 19th century. Through entertainment such as music and film, the thought of being like the person I am listening or watching becomes a fervent almost rabid desire. The intimacy of the cinema or the radio becomes the grounds of imagination's garden. A bond of trust is built on the hidden hurts of the screenwriter or the musician. In which they must exfoliate in the processes of their work to better understand themselves. All art can be understood as a form of self therapy, a way to heal wounds from childhood and break down psychological barriers to form a better, more congruent relationship with oneself. The social adoration people have for a musical artist or film actor has little to do with the inherent virtue of the individual. Like the lighthouse on a stormy night, the artist is putting out a light into the sheer unknown darkness. A form of guidance and hope. The wafting boat in the cold choppy waters are the people. A divine selfishness will blind the intentions of the truest desire. The utterance of altruism becomes a heavy burden to carry. As an artist believes the purpose of her art is create an emotional resonance with those that follow and fulfill her childhood dream. And as a fan he believes the purpose of his fandom is to support the artist mental and emotional well being. Unbeknownst to both there are deeper and darker forces at work. Primordial impulses with enhanced brain function make an individual believe he is less Beasley than he truly is. To be selfish, is not the inherent problem, it is suggestion that I care more about myself than I do anyway around me, more than my friends, more than family. The reason this thought is considered to be so revolting is we don't want to admit it to be true. That underneath the veneer of smiles and niceties, we are all beasts. Vile, selfish and intense, all looking at how to increase our lot in life while pretending to care about the people next to us. Consider this to be part of the rules of the social game, that being you must make people around you feel safe and good about themselves. Yet the ultimate goal is to win for yourself. Selfish then can be defined as a a direction of the psyche. If you are acquiring material items to enhance your social and economic rank. The selfishness is focused externally on your desires and how you mustard the ability to finally fulfill them. Whereas if you are producing art, the selfishness is focused internally on your mind and how to transpose the suffering you have experienced into an ecstasy for those that have the opportunity to experience you.
